Create digital drumbeats with the Korg Volca Drum
Some two weeks ago, I bought this machine on a whim. One of our creatives at Kaliber had a spare and offered it for sale.
I am by no means musically inclined, but Finn loves to listen to and create gaming music. I had no idea how to use this machine. It has some beats pre-programmed but how to edit them and what those knobs mean? I just didn’t know.
Thanks to Youtube I found a tutorial that walked me through creating a basic drumbeat, and even adding some distortion and overtones. Finn and I had a blast tinkering with it, bringing to life some of the game sounds he had imagined. He had so much fun exploring this digital percussion synthesizer, and I’m really hoping he keeps at it. We might even take it along to his bi-weekly producer lessons that start after the summer break.
And just to wrap things up, here’s a short clip of me attempting to get some distortion and extra blips out of one of the stock beats on the Korg. It’ll give you a little taste of what this electronic instrument can do, and of course have a laugh at my lack of musical abilities.
