This letter is an invitation from those who gave us the open internet as we know it. It’s an invitation to the United Nations to reconsider the steps they take with the Global Digital Compact or at least include those who are familiar with the technological framework of the web.

The Internet is an unusual technology because it is fundamentally distributed. It is built up from all of the participating networks.[…] Yet over the past few years we have noticed a willingness to address issues on the Internet and Web by attempting to insert a hierarchical model of governance over technical matters.

I wasn’t aware of the Global Digital Compact initiative but it is something I will definitely have a look at in the coming days.
